Root canal has a bad reputation, but it’s not really deserved. The cause of pain is not this vital procedure, especially when done by our experts here at Apex Endodontics. It is the infected tooth that has resulted in pain. Our job is to relieve that pain. You’re in good hands with our West Nyack endodontist, who does root canal therapy every day. Don’t settle for a dentist who has far less experience with it.
For the vast majority of people, the realization that something is wrong with a tooth is announced with pain, and it can be severe or even excruciating. It’s typically most obvious when you apply pressure to the tooth or try to chew with it. Sensitivity to hot or cold foods and drinks is also common. You might also notice gum tenderness or tooth discoloration. When you come in to see our West Nyack endodontist, you will be examined and x-rays will be taken. Once the need for root canal is confirmed, the process begins with sufficient local anesthesia to keep you comfortable. Most patients report very little or even no pain at all during it, so there is no need to be nervous. The goal is to save your tooth so that it will not have to be extracted, which would leave you with empty space and a cosmetic deficiency, and less efficient chewing. Your other teeth may shift and cause discomfort, with your jaws becoming misaligned. Our West Nyack endodontist may need more than one session to complete the root canal, and if so then you will be fitted with a temporary crown between visits. When the tooth heals fully, your general or restorative dentist will take impressions to have a permanent crown made for you. This will restore the tooth to its original size.
